Description
DESCRIPTION: Blind or visually impaired support services offer direct support to people who are blind, deaf-blind or with low vision. Programs may teach Independent Living Skills (ILS) to people with a visual impairment. MORE INFORMATION Offers blind and low vision rehabilitation services such as: * Vision-enhancing devices and technologies and training in how to use them * Training in new visual skills to help with everyday tasks (like reading, writing, cooking, managing your medicines, and locating and reading signs) * Sensory training * Mobility and orientation training * Strategies for restoring your ability to communicate through writing or using the computer * Counseling and group therapy to help you adjust to blindness * Family-centered care that helps your family learn how to support you as you adjust to blindness * Outpatient vision impairment rehabilitation services (https://www.rehab.va.gov/PROSTHETICS/factsheet/BRS-FactSheet-VisualImpairmentServicesOutpatientRehabilitation.pdf) The Blind Rehabilitation Centers (https://www.prosthetics.va.gov/blindrehab/locations.asp) are residential inpatient programs that provide comprehensive adjustment to blindness training * Provides training and support to blind and low vision Veterans and active duty service members to help them live independently * Helps family and caregivers to understand how to help someone with low or no vision * Assists in enhancing home environments and reducing caregiver burden
