Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-approved housing counseling is for consumers who are seeking, financing, maintaining, renting or owning a home. The sessions help consumers make responsible housing choices in light of their needs and financial situation. Housing counselors educate first-time home buyers about financing options. Counselors also help anyone who wants to (or already does) rent or own a home, to make their rent or mortgage payments and to be a responsible tenant or owner. Counselors who provide this service are trained and approved by HUD. MORE INFORMATION Counselors provide ongoing guidance to:

• Help you assess your financial situation
• Determine if you are ready to buy and help you calculate what you can afford
• Address barriers, such as credit, debt or student loans
• Share information on current mortgage loan programs
• Connect you to down payment and closing cost assistance programs
• Achieve your goals based on your specific needs

Services are available for Minnesota residents by phone or virtually. They also offer in-person appointments across Minnesota. Counselors are fluent in Spanish and Hmong. In addition, American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is available as needed.
