Semi-Independent Living Services (SILS)

To be eligible to receive SILS, the adult (18 or older) must: * Be determined to have a developmental disability or related condition(s) as defined by the state of Minnesota * Be unable to function independently without SILS * Not be at risk of placement in an Intermediate Care Facility for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (ICF/DD) * Not be residing in an institution, ICF/DD, or nursing facility * Not be receiving home and community based waiver services
The county or tribal human services office will provide an assessment and determine eligibility for the program.
Costs for SILS services are funded by counties, tribal agencies, and the Minnesota Department of Human Services Disability Services Division. There are no recipient fees associated with SILS.

Semi-Independent Living Services (SILS) help people to reach their goals and lead self-directed lives in the community. Services include training and assistance in independent living skills for adults with developmental disabilities or related conditions. Services provided may include training and assistance in: * First aid and getting help in an emergency * Learning and exercising rights and responsibilities of community living * Meal planning and preparation * Obtaining and maintaining a home * Personal appearance and hygiene * Self-administration of medication * Shopping * Social, recreation and transportation skills, including appropriate social behavior * Using the phone and other utilities * Managing money * Engaging in activities that make it possible for adults with developmental disabilities or related conditions to live in the community SILS staff may provide supported employment in community work environment settings for a recipient who already has a job but may be experiencing some challenges in maintaining it, or is at risk of losing such employment. This requires direct contact between the SILS recipient and staff person providing Support Employment. A SILS recipient may receive a one-time housing allowance of up to $1,500 to cover costs related to damage/security deposit for housing rental, utility deposit, household furnishings and other items necessary that will enable the person to secure a residence in which to receive SILS. MORE INFORMATION Services include training and assistance in independent living skills for adults with developmental disabilities who live or soon will live in their own apartments. These services are for people who do not require 24-hour support but need some assistance to live independently in the community. This assistance may include training in money management, shopping, meal preparation, personal appearance and hygiene, self-administration of medications, emergency procedures, use of community resources, or development of social, recreational, and transportation abilities.
