A psychiatric hospital provides inpatient services including diagnostic exams and long or short-term treatments. Patients may be children, adolescents, adults and/or older adults who have acute (short-term and severe) psychiatric disorders, require hospitalization for maximum benefit, and who may be a threat to themselves, their families, or others if left in the community or placed in a less restrictive treatment setting.
These hospitals may be certified under Medicare as inpatient psychiatric hospitals, or distinct psychiatric units of acute care hospitals or critical access hospitals.
Services may include:
- A complete evaluation
- 24-hour care in a supportive, therapeutic environment
- Counseling for the patient and family
- Adjunctive therapies (care in addition to the primary care) as needed
- Medication, if required
- An aftercare program following discharge.
