A psychiatric hospital provides inpatient services including diagnostic exams and long or short-term treatments. Patients may be children, adolescents, adults and/or older adults who have acute (short-term and severe) psychiatric disorders, require hospitalization for maximum benefit, and who may be a threat to themselves, their families, or others if left in the community or placed in a less restrictive treatment setting. These hospitals may be certified under Medicare as inpatient psychiatric hospitals, or distinct psychiatric units of acute care hospitals or critical access hospitals. Services may include:
  • A complete evaluation
  • 24-hour care in a supportive, therapeutic environment
  • Counseling for the patient and family
  • Adjunctive therapies (care in addition to the primary care) as needed
  • Medication, if required
  • An aftercare program following discharge.
Psychiatric hospitals may also offer a range of mental health services for out-patients. This provider is a licensed hospital by the Minnesota Department of Health and is subject to periodic health and safety inspections by the Department of Health or an approved accrediting agency. If also a federally-certified psychiatric hospital, the facility is subject to periodic inspections by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Many of these people have complex medical histories. Services include units dedicated to the treatment of:

  • Individuals with mental illness who face a criminal trial
  • Patients with high levels of behavioral issues
