Site Service Area

Hennepin County

A psychiatric hospital provides inpatient services including diagnostic exams and long or short-term treatments. Patients may be children, adolescents, adults and/or older adults who have acute (short-term and severe) psychiatric disorders, require hospitalization for maximum benefit, and who may be a threat to themselves, their families, or others if left in the community or placed in a less restrictive treatment setting. These hospitals may be certified under Medicare as inpatient psychiatric hospitals, or distinct psychiatric units of acute care hospitals or critical access hospitals. Services may include:
  • A complete evaluation
  • 24-hour care in a supportive, therapeutic environment
  • Counseling for the patient and family
  • Adjunctive therapies (care in addition to the primary care) as needed
  • Medication, if required
  • An aftercare program following discharge.
Psychiatric hospitals may also offer a range of mental health services for out-patients. This provider is a licensed hospital by the Minnesota Department of Health and is subject to periodic health and safety inspections by the Department of Health or an approved accrediting agency. If also a federally-certified psychiatric hospital, the facility is subject to periodic inspections by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
