The St. James Hotel is officially recognized as a Historic Hotel of America by the National Trust of Historic Preservation, one of only two in Minnesota. The hotel was included in a recent ranking of the "most significant ceilings and domes" in historic hotels. The publication mentions two ceilings in the St. James Hotel. The first is in the Victorian dining room off of the first floor lobby. The other notable ceiling is located on the 5th floor off of the elevator. The ceiling includes "ornate woodwork and stained glass, complementing the natural beauty just beyond the windows to magnificent effect," according to the publication. The St. James Hotel was previously recognized by Historic Hotels of America in 2019, when it was named a "Best Small Historic Hotel."
Other lodging options are the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, the AmericInn, and the Nichols Inn, all of which are located in the West End Historic District adjacent to the Pottery Museum. More information on other lodging is available at Visit Red Wing.
The Red Wing HPC has several links to things that will be of interest to conference attendees, such as podcasts and story maps.
Visit Red Wing has information on things to do, restaurants, transportation, and a downloadable visitor's guide.
Please note that all tours involve walking with some requiring going up and down stairs. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Tours are included in your registration fee.
For the Wednesday evening Welcome Reception, light refreshments will be available. Attendees will be able to purchase Mexican food from the Rancho Loco Grill & Bar, which is adjacent to the museum, or from several other restaurants located nearby.
Every effort will be made to accommodate participants with accessibility and mobility issues, including transportation, if needed, from hotels to meeting locations and special events. Participants are reminded that many historic and private buildings do not have elevators and require climbing steps. Buses will require the ability to maneuver steps and may drop off participants some distance from the destination. Some tours will include walking segments. Please contact the Minnesota SHPO prior to registration to determine accessibility of activities, and how we can make the Preserve Minnesota Conference a great experience for you!
