Note: Principal operator refers to the person primarily responsible for the on-site, day-to-day operation of the farm or ranch business. The principal operator may be an owner or a hired manager. The number of principal operators is the same as the number of farms. Total operators includes principal operators plus any second and third operators associated with the farming operation, and in many cases includes the spouse or other family members of the principal operator.
