Marisa Helms

Director of Census Communications

As director of census communications for the Minnesota State Demographic Center, Marisa Helms manages the communications and public relations strategy for Minnesota’s 2020 Census outreach campaign. Her work focuses on engaging with government, non-profit, business and media partners to communicate the importance of the 2020 Census so that everyone in Minnesota is counted once, only once, and in the right place by Census Day on April 1, 2020.

Marisa comes to the Minnesota State Demographic Center after a long career in journalism. She has been a news reporter for Minnesota Public Radio, WDET-FM (Detroit, MI) and KQED-FM (San Francisco, CA). She also independently reported and produced two award-winning radio documentaries for KFAI-FM, and a series of radio spots for the Minnesota Historical Society. She has written numerous articles on business, politics and people for MinnPost, the Star Tribune, Finance & Commerce, Reuters, Minnesota Cities magazine and others.

Marisa received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a master’s degree in Film Studies from San Francisco State University.
