Survey Manual

The guidelines contained in the State Archaeologist's Survey Manual meet or exceed the standards and guidelines of both the Secretary of the Interior and Minnesota Historic Preservation Office (MnHPO). Use the link below to access the manual:

Using the Survey Manual

The Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) only requires these survey guidelines be observed in the following scenarios:

  • When doing archaeological work on non-federal public land
  • When doing a Burial Authentication
  • When doing work for the purposes of Legacy Amendment-funded Statewide Survey projects

However, when reviewing private development projects or archaeological work on private land the State Archaeologist reserves the right to reject any survey result or report that does not follow these guidelines. The State Archaeologist recommends that professionals always follow professional standards and guidelines for any type of archaeological work on any type of land.
