The 2017 Midwinter Conference follows tradition and will be hosted by the Minneapolis Marriott City Center.  2017 marks the 114th year of the Grand Midwinter Banquet. It also marks the 117th year that the Veterans of Foreign Wars will offer its Services to our Veterans and our Communities.

A New Year will arrive so we are working to keep some of the familiar aspects of the Midwinter Conference, but will be adding in some NEW ideas as well.

Annually we ask old and new members to attend the Midwinter Conference. This venue has always offered an opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones.  If you have been away from VFW functions for a while, maybe this would be the time to come back.  Post and Auxiliaries again this year are encouraged to bring and/or sponsor younger members to this Midwinter Conference.  This event would offer a great opportunity to WELCOME HOME many of our Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.

NEW

2017 will include several seminar and activities that would be of interested to every member of the Post or Auxiliary.  If you have never attended a State VFW function this would be a good time to start.

Buddy Poppy Contest

Meetings & Displays

The Annual State Buddy Poppy Display Contest will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the in the Marriott 4th Floor Atrium.  All participants of the District Poppy Display Contest will be eligible to compete in the Department Contest.  Guests should take time to view these works of art created primarily (and sometimes completely) from V.F.W. Buddy Poppies.

The main purpose of the Buddy Poppy Displays are to promote the distribution of Poppies before Memorial Day.  Many displays are used in store windows of local communities to inform the public of the upcoming VFW Buddy Poppy Day.  Along with Promotional Displays, a number of centerpieces and corsages can also be viewed.  These creations are used at dinners, nursing homes and other VFW and Auxiliary functions.

Buddy Poppy Contest Entries will remain on display through the Grand Banquet Saturday evening.  This will allow the opportunity to share these wonderful displays with our evening guests and help spread the ‘Story of the VFW Buddy Poppy’.

On both Friday and Saturday, the Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend a Gambling Controls Information Seminar and Council meetings covering many VFW Programs and Activities.  If you have questions regarding any of our programs, now would be a good time to have them answered.  Our Veterans Homes will be set up to discuss their services and address any needs you may have.

NEW

Midwinter Conference will feature the theme of Veterans Mental Health.  As we strive to increase information and access to resources for our membership, we are reformatting our Saturday meeting schedules and extending the Council meetings into Sunday morning.  Saturday will start off with VFW Seminars while the Auxiliary hosts Council business.  In the afternoon, there will be additional seminars for both VFW & Auxiliary to attend.  We are also looking to include some special hands-on activities, so watch for the announcements.  Throughout Saturday, attendees will be able to visit and expanded display area including resources and organizations that either service veterans or provide partnerships with our organization.  The weekend will wrap up with Council meetings on Sunday morning.

Voice of Democracy & Patriot’s Pen

The Voice of Democracy Program, celebrating its 70th Anniversary as a VFW Program, has become one of the VFW's more popular Youth Activity Programs.  As in past years, the nine District Voice of Democracy students will be honored at the Midwinter Conference Banquet.  During the Banquet, the top winners will be announced and the First Place student will give his/her speech.  To meet and listen to these young leaders of tomorrow is an experience one does not want to miss, as they address the theme "My Responsibility to America".

This year's Midwinter Banquet will be the Formal Event of the year.  Not only will you hear the First Place Voice of Democracy speech, you will also hear from our State Patriot’s Pen winter, National Representatives and our State leaders. If you have never attended a Midwinter Banquet before or have missed some in the past, you should attend this one.  Banquet tickets can be ordered through Department Headquarters. All VFW and Auxiliary members are encouraged to order early as seating will be on a first come, first served basis.

Start off the evening sharing the Buddy Poppy contest displays that will be available for viewing during the reception.  Use this opportunity to share the meaning and purpose of the VFW Buddy Poppy with new members and special guests.  We continue to look for ways to streamline the Grand Banquet and keep the focus on our student winners and celebrating their accomplishments.
