TEXAS CITY, TEXAS--Jorge Alberto Vazquez, 40, and Veronica Vazquez, 37, turned themselves over to authorities Friday, after a Galveston County grand jury indicted the couple with causing serious bodily injury to a child.

Mrs. Vazquez reportedly phoned 9-1-1 on May 23, saying that her 11-year-old daughter Bethany, who had cerebral palsy, was not breathing. Emergency workers took the girl to a local hospital, where she later died.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Galveston County Medical Examiner ruled Bethany's cause of death as malnutrition and medical neglect. The girl reportedly weighed just 34 pounds when she died.

A Texas City Police Detective said the couple has been cooperating in the investigation. Each was being held late Friday on $100,000 bail.

If convicted, each could face from five to 99 years in prison.
