Beijing Establishes Nation's First Designated Parking
August 25, 2004
BEIJING, CHINA--The Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday that Beijing has become the first city in China to have parking zones designated for people with disabilities.
The city, which has a total population estimated at 14 million, has set up 32 designated parking lots around the city. The lots are marked with a distinctive white wheelchair logo, and will serve motorcyclists and car drivers with physical disabilities.
Those who do not have disabilities will be fined for parking in the reserved zones.
Authorities with the Beijing Municipal Traffic Administration said they plan to establish more such spaces around the city.
