Godfrey Refuses Rehire Offer

MONMOUTH, WALES--Karen Godfrey says she does not want her old job back, now that her former employer has changed its mind about needing her services.

Godfrey, who has learning disabilities (the term used in the United Kingdom for "mental retardation"), was fired from WH Smith the week before Christmas because she was not covered by the company's insurance plan.

Earlier this week, Huw Edwards MP publicly condemned the company at the House of Commons.

WH Smith responded by offering Godfrey her part-time job back -- with full benefits.

It may be too late.

Godfrey now says she doesn't want to go back.

The Disability Rights Commission says it will support her if she wants to take legal action against her former employer.

Now, the agency that placed Godfrey at WH Smith could be under scrutiny for allowing the company to pay her for the last five years with gift vouchers instead of money.
