Self Advocates: The "R" Word

Mary Raasch: The "R" word is a mean, awful, bad word. I don't think it should ever be used. It should be taken out of the vocabulary.

Roberta Blomster: Oh, I remember during the time I was working at McNamara Insurance Company in White Bear, one of my co-workers there was saying it, and I had to approach her and say, "This word really hurts me, and I would appreciate it if you don't say it anymore."

Interviewer: Did that work?

Roberta Blomster: Yeah. She... she stopped saying it, so...

The GCDD is funded under the provisions of P.L. 106-402. The federal law also provides funding to the Minnesota Disability Law Center,the state Protection and Advocacy System, and to the Institute on Community Integration, the state University Center for Excellence. The Minnesota network of programs works to increase the IPSII of people with developmental disabilities and families into community life.
