Costs Associated with Purchasing Technology

Below is a brief breakdown of potential costs associated with purchasing some technologies.

Some devices shown on the master list may also require monthly service fees which are not included here.

This information is meant to give a ball park figure; however, actual costs may differ depending upon the capabilities and how the technology may be used.

For example, a few of these apps also require programming and customization.

Mobile technology – can be used to demonstrate various apps related to emergency preparedness (including communication, behavior/emotional support and social skills training).

  • iPad (with accessories – protective case, speakers, etc.) $900
    • iPad requires WiFi and computer access (may mean additional costs)
  • Apps (variety of apps that support emergency preparedness, communication, social skills, etc.) $150 and up 
    • Apps must be purchased through iTunes
  • Total (approximate) cost per device: $1,050
     
  • iPod Touch (with accessories – protective case, cables, etc.) $550
    • iPod Touch requires computer and internet access (may mean additional costs)
  • Apps (variety of apps that support emergency preparedness, communication, social skills, etc.) $150 and up 
    • Apps must be purchased through iTunes  
  • Total (approximate) cost per device: $700
     
  • PocketPC with Community Integration Suite (AbleLink Technologies) $1,600

Stand alone tracking devices (do not require service)

  • iOn Kids $200
  • Loc8tor $200
  • Care Trak $700 (requires new battery from company every two months for an annual approximate cost of $50)

Miscellaneous – ID bracelets, temporary tattoos, etc.

The GCDD is funded under the provisions of P.L. 106-402. The federal law also provides funding to the Minnesota Disability Law Center,the state Protection and Advocacy System, and to the Institute on Community Integration, the state University Center for Excellence. The Minnesota network of programs works to increase the IPSII of people with developmental disabilities and families into community life.
