Building Strong Communities (BSC) offers Veterans a career path into the construction industry. Each year, BSC delivers a free comprehensive 12-week program from February to May immersing participants in experiences designed to prepare them for entry into the construction industry and registered apprenticeships. More than 160 participants have already been placed in 21 trades.
This program welcomes participants from all backgrounds, including those seeking a career change. Participants undergo rigorous training through a multi-craft curriculum that covers safety, trade introductions, hands-on skills, mentorship, job coaching, construction tours and contractor interviews. Additionally, BSC provides each participant with work boots, protective equipment and starter tools to support their transition into the workforce. Ongoing program support is provided to assist with job placement efforts.
BSC Executive Director Rick Martagon is a U.S. Navy Veteran who has more than 27 years of experience in the construction industry.
“This program changes lives by offering a valuable hands-on education with union-endorsed training, a foot in the door to a great career in the trades, and a path to family-sustaining wages,” said Martagon.
Upon completion of the program, BSC helps place participants in the construction industry through careers linked to registered apprenticeship programs. This allows for continued on-the-job training so participants can earn-and-learn as they further develop in their career. Veterans can access their GI benefits to pay for certain ongoing training related costs.
No previous construction employment or experience is required, but there are minimum requirements for applicants. To be eligible for the program, you must be 18 years old by May 1, have earned a high school diploma, GED or equivalent, possess a valid driver’s license, have reliable transportation and are not currently enrolled in a construction union or trade training program. You also must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
BSC is an inclusive program encouraging participation from all walks of life and seeks participants who are coachable and committed to completing its rigorous program. BSC hosts virtual information sessions during its recruitment and enrollment period occurring each fall season.
