Mid-August in Minnesota means planning for the State Fair, squeezing the last weeks of summer fun out of your favorite lake, and thinking about what you and your family need for back-to-school season. However, Minnesota Veterans know they’ve got their own checklist for taking advantage of the educational opportunities they’ve earned because of their service.
Jim Miller, Director of Veterans Education and Occupational Resources at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) shares three things Veterans should be thinking about if they’re heading back to school.
If you haven’t already, go to our website and figure out who your /mdva/assets/2024-09-26-hevp-map_tcm1066-630559.pdfRegional Educational Coordinator is for the school that you plan on attending. Connect with that coordinator and make sure you’re getting all the benefits you’ve earned for the education you’re seeking. We’re reaching “go” time with school, so I recommend doing this as soon as possible.
While you’re checking in with your /mdva/assets/2024-09-26-hevp-map_tcm1066-630559.pdfRegional Educational Coordinator, make sure to also check in with your County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO) to learn about all your eligible benefits. Benefits and eligibilities change frequently. Now is a good time of year to connect for the very latest. You just might discover you qualify for more benefits.
Going back for more education doesn’t always mean attending a brick-and-mortar school. When you’re ready to go back into the workforce, take advantage of education benefits through on-the-job-training (OJT) and apprenticeships. Specific questions about OJT and apprenticeships, contact MDVA Veterans Education Program team members at mngibill@state.mn.us.
