On Sunday May 26th, the State Veterans Cemetery hosted their annual Memorial Day Service sponsored by the Minnesota State Veterans Memorial Association. The event had a great turnout with 1,200 people in attendance. The ceremony began with a musical piece from the Richfield Symphonic Band and was officially started by the traditional Parade of Flags. The parade colors were carried by representatives from different Veterans organizations.
The keynote speaker for the event was LTC Chad Sackett, Deputy Camp Commander, Camp Ripley. Also providing remarks was Kris Nelson, the 2011-2012 National President of the American Legion Auxiliary. This year’s Parade Marshal was Robert Mace, from the Waite Park American Legion. The ceremony also included the placing of the wreaths, several songs representing Memorial Day, and the first public showing of the US Navy painting commissioned for the Veterans Educational Historic Project. The cemetery director, David Swantek received several compliments about the ceremony and what went on but mostly about the upkeep of the grounds. “Attendees really enjoyed the look of the grounds and how well they were maintained. This is a direct reflection of the dedication and hard work of the employees I supervise Cory Engen, Kevin Doucette, Jerimiah Determan and Michele Gorka.” said Swantek.
