Many materials may be checked out of the Library for either three days or three weeks. E-mail or call 651-296-2775 with any questions about loan periods for specific types of material or the possibility of borrowing from another library. Loan deposits may be required.
For attorneys outside of St. Paul or Minneapolis, we will send three-week-loan items via UPS and bill for the cost. The borrower is responsible for mailing back the item. E-mail or call 651-296-2775 with your request, and be sure to include your attorney registration number, address, email address, and phone number.
To request photocopying, scanning, or faxing service, contact us by e-mail or by phone at (651) 296-2775. Exact citations are required. Turnaround is usually within 24 hours when the Library is open. (Library Hours)
Materials may be protected by copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code). Please note: Because of their size, the Law Library does not include briefs in its copy service.

The Library welcomes written comments about this policy.
Library staff are available to answer basic questions, locate materials and provide assistance with using the library's resources. Some questions are best researched in the law library, and library staff may ask you to come into the law library to pursue your research here. Library staff cannot provide services that might be interpreted as the unauthorized practice of law, such as locating relevant cases, interpreting statutes, or giving legal advice.
Priority of Service:
Our first priority is to assist patrons within the library, followed by phone and e-mail reference. Since e-mail is not always reliable or timely, we suggest reaching us in person or by phone if you are working under a strict time deadline.
How to Contact Us:
Another option is to contact your local public law library.
Inmates under Department of Corrections jurisdiction, regardless of location:
These inmates are served by our Law Library Service to Prisoners program. Librarians visit each prison once per month. In addition, inmates may call the librarians at 651-297-4969 or write to them at LLSP, 25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul MN 55155. There is no cost to the inmate, although they are limited to 80 pages, or 8 items, per 2 week period.
Non-DOC Inmates in county jails, state hospitals & regional treatment centers:
Our reference librarians will provide legal information to these inmates under our normal copy policy: The staff of the Library will photocopy and mail materials. The cost is 25 cents per page ($3.00 minimum), plus first-class postage, up to 100 pages per week. Limited exceptions to this policy may be made with the approval of the Head of Public Services or State Law Librarian. The library accepts written requests only. Inmates may be referred to the local county law library if that library already provides services to the jail.
In support of the fundamental principle of fair and equitable treatment under law, the Minnesota Judicial Branch strives to eliminate from court operations bias that is based on race, gender, ethnicity, age, disability, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation and any other status protected by law.
All judges and court employees are expected to treat other court employees, court users, and the public with dignity and respect.
