Commissioner Tony Sertich's statement on IRRRB Chair and Representative Tom Rukavina's retirement from the Minnesota Legislature

May 11, 2012

“I want to thank Representative Rukavina for his years of service to the people of Minnesota and the Iron Range.

No one has more passion and heart in standing up for the ‘little guy’ and for being a champion for his home area of the Iron Range. Over the past 26 years, Tom fought hard for every person and every community that he represented through his public service.

Tom left his fingerprints on so much good work in northeastern Minnesota. He worked hard to improve our economy, our communities, and made a huge impact on improving our education system. From the Applied Learning Institute to Iron Range Engineering to the Iron Range Scholarship program, Tom took the values that were passed down from his Croatian and Italian heritage to give our future generations a passport to a better future.

There will never be another like him, and I consider it an honor to have served with Tom Rukavina and to call him a friend. I know there is one happy little granddaughter on the Iron Range today.”
