In 2005, Minnesota law was amended to permit advanced practice registered nurses ("APRNs") to serve as examiners and health officers under the Minnesota commitment act. Specifically, Minnesota Statute section 253B.02, subdivisions 7 and 9 and section 253B.05, subdivision 2. permits:

• An advanced practice registered nurse certified in mental health to write an examiner's statement for emergency hold care and when filing a petition to the court in support of commitment and/or involuntary administration of medication.
• Any APRN to order a 72-hour hold.
