In keeping with appropriate flag etiquette and U.S. Code, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton may order the state flag to be flown at half-staff. He may also order the national flag to be flown at half-staff on state property only. A state flag on state property is required by law to be flown at half-staff if the national flag is flown at half-staff.

To preserve the integrity and special significance of lowering the flag, the Governor's office will only issue proclamations to lower flags to half-staff under very limited circumstances.

    May 15, 2015 - President John F. Kennedy declared the first Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, 1962, as a tribute to peace officers and in honor of peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, lost their lives or became disabled in the line of duty. This day has been observed in our country annually ever since. On this day, and every day, it is fitting to honor those peace officers who gave their lives to protect ours, and to thank the over 10,000 law enforcement officers who serve in Minnesota’s 446 law enforcement agencies, for their dedication and service to our communities. Governor Dayton has also ordered all flags at state and federal buildings in Minnesota to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 15, 2015, in honor and remembrance of Peace Officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty.

    April 14, 2015 - In honor and remembrance of President Abraham Lincoln, President Barack Obama has ordered that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of Federal Government throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Governor Dayton has also ordered all U.S. flags and Minnesota flags be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota, from now until sunset on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, as a mark of respect for the memory of President Abraham Lincoln.
  • Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
    December 07, 2014 - In honor and remembrance of those who died during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and those who sacrificed their lives for our liberty and freedom during World War II, Governor Mark Dayton has ordered all U.S. flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset on Sunday, December 7.

    September 28, 2014 - In honor of firefighters who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty, Governor Mark Dayton has ordered all United States flags and Minnesota flags be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset on Sunday, September 28, 2014.

    May 26, 2014 - In deference to the proclamation issued this afternoon by President Barack Obama, Governor Mark Dayton has revised his Memorial Day proclamation. The Governor's revised proclamation orders all United States flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 26, 2014, in honor of those who have served on our behalf.
