Governor Dayton Holds First Annual Governor's Pheasant Opener

Posted on October 17, 2011 at 9:40 AM

This weekend, Governor Mark Dayton held the First Annual Governor's Pheasant Opener in Montevideo, Minnesota. Celebrating the pheasant opener is a long-standing tradition in many Minnesota communities, but this was the first time Minnesota's governor has hosted an official pheasant hunting opener event.

Governor Dayton greeted hunters and guests at Watson Hunting Camp before heading out at 9:00 a.m. to hunt on one of the Wildlife Management Areas in Lac qui Parle County. Minnesota Speaker Kurt Zellers, DNR wildlife manager Dave Trauba, and local hunter host Paul Johannes joined the Governor's hunting party.

The Star Tribune highlighted the event in Sunday's newspaper:

The first-ever Minnesota Governor's Pheasant Opener here Saturday proved that even political adversaries can find common ground in pursuit of wily ringnecks.

On a brilliant autumn day, Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, and Rep. Kurt Zellers, Republican House Speaker, hunted pheasants together to kick off the season.
