The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages the state's natural resources. Hunting, fishing, state forests and parks, lakes, rivers and streams, boating and water safety, trails, snowmobiling, skiing, education, enforcement, wildlife management, lands and minerals are managed by the DNR.

Requirements:

Applicant must submit Mining and Reclamation Plans covering the life of the mine.

Fee:

There's an application fee of $5,000 for a peat operation.

The commissioner is also authorized to require a bond, security, or other financial assurance to ensure compliance with the requirements of the permit.

Period of Issuance:

Life of the mine.

Other Pertinent Information:

The permit is require for peat mining operations that are planned to exceed 40 acres in size, or that have the potential for significant environmental effects.

The Department suggests that a pre-application conference be held to discuss the project and the type of permit information that is required.
