The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages the state's natural resources. Hunting, fishing, state forests and parks, lakes, rivers and streams, boating and water safety, trails, snowmobiling, skiing, education, enforcement, wildlife management, lands and minerals are managed by the DNR.

The MN Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) will need to know party's name and address, stockpile name or location, and quantity of materials to be removed, in order to prepare permit.


Paint rock, taconite, or other iron-bearing material stockpiled on state-owned land from mining operations are available for sale for the use in construction or maintenance of roads, tailings basins, settling basins, dikes, dams, bank fills, or other works. A permit for removal of the material is available over-the-counter from the Hibbing office. Quantity of material is limited to 10,000 cubic yards per permit. Longer term leases are also available for large quantities.


No fee for issuance. Payment for material, plus sales tax, must be received at the time of the issuance of the permit.

Period of Issuance:

Three months, with maximum of six months.

Length of Determination Process:

Over-the-counter service, same hour service, provided in Hibbing, if permittee comes to office to sign permit and brings payment.
