Commissioner Jesson statement on increased controls for prescription drugs

October 25, 2013

Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson released the following statement on increased controls for prescription drugs:

The Department of Human Services supports the federal Food and Drug Administration recommendations to tighten restrictions on opioid-based prescriptions. The proposal will help curb the opioid medication abuse epidemic among Minnesotans with more stringent requirements on the supply of drugs a patient can receive without a new prescription. They will also strengthen rules for filling, refilling and labeling of those opioid-based medications. Curbing the escalating problem of prescription opioid abuse is a key priority of the Minnesota State Substance Abuse Strategy (PDF). In addition to recent steps at the state level, the FDA recommendations will help us decrease this abuse.
