February 25, 2013

DHS is co-sponsoring a daylong workshop aimed at addressing health policy related to health equity, determinants of health, and health disparities affecting marginalized racial and ethnic communities. "The People's Health Equity Leadership Institute 2013 Spring Workshop: Using the 'White Racial Frame' in addressing Health Policy, Determinants of Health and Health Disparities" will be held Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rondo Community Outreach Library, 461 Dale St. N., St. Paul.

The event is free and open to the public, but preregistration is required: http://tpheli.eventbrite.com

Workshop participants will:
  • Define the terms “health equity,” “health disparity” and “health justice.”
  • Understand and describe the four broad categories of determinants of health: social, behavioral, environmental, biological and genetic.
  • Describe current issues in health policy related to determinants of health and health disparities affecting marginalized racial and ethnic communities.

Workshop facilitators are Herb Perkins and Margery Otto of ASDIC (Antiracism Study-Dialogue Circles) and Makeda Norris of Impetus — Let's Get Started.

The event is also co-sponsored by The People’s Health Equity Leadership Institute, with funding from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Contact DHS Community Relations Director Antonia Apolinário-Wilcoxon at 651-431-3301 for more information.
