Commissioner Jesson statement on opioid painkiller prescribing

July 01, 2014

Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson issued the following statement today on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's new Vital Signs Issue: Opioid Painkiller Prescribing.

“The increase in prescriptions for painkillers is a key cause of more drug overdoses and addiction. The CDC Vital Signs information issued today provides important information for health care providers about this issue and how the states compare. While we are pleased that Minnesota is one of five states with the lowest rate of overall opioid prescriptions, overprescribing is a significant issue in certain groups and geographic regions. The Department of Human Services, together with our medical partners, is developing protocols to appropriately prescribe opioids and provide other treatments for pain relief and ensure that people with addictions receive treatment.”

More information about the Vital Signs is on the CDC website
