Commissioner Jesson statement on report examining kids’ success across racial and ethnic groups

April 01, 2014

St. Paul—Today Department of Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson issued the following statement on the Annie E. Casey Foundation report, “Race for Results: Building a Path to Opportunity for All Children”:

“This report calls to attention the persistently troubling status of children of color and their families. Minnesota ranks 5th in the nation for white children, but significantly lower for African American, American Indian, Asian and Latino children.  We must do better. We need to continue recent progress, including expanding access to quality child care and efforts to improve early learning opportunities.”

The report features a new index that compares how children are progressing on key milestones across racial and ethnic groups at the state and national level.
