The State of Minnesota launched an Own Your Future campaign in June 2012. The purpose of Own Your Future is to encourage Minnesotans to create a plan for their long-term care.

The overall initiative includes three components and is sponsored by the Dayton/Prettner Solon administration.  The Minnesota Department of Human Services is providing the major staff support for the effort.

  1. The first component of the campaign is a public awareness campaign to urge Minnesotans to create a plan for their long-term care needs.
  2. The second component is the development of new or refreshed financial and insurance products geared specifically for middle-income households.
  3. The third is exploration of needed changes in the long-term care provisions within the Medical Assistance (MA) program that would better align MA with the use of private financing options that pay for long-term care.

Yvonne Prettner Solon, Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, convenes the panel and chairs the full panel meetings.

The objectives of Minnesota’s Own Your Future campaign are:

  1. Raise awareness among Minnesotans of the importance of planning now so they will have personal and financial options to meet future long-term care needs.
  2. Increase the number of Minnesotans who have taken action to address and provide for their future long-term care.
  3. Increase the number and quality of private financing products available to middle-income individuals for use in paying long-term care costs.
  4. Improve the alignment between MA and private financing long-term care options so that individuals have greater incentives to utilize these private options.

To assist the State in this effort, the sponsors created an advisory panel.  The advisory panel represents key organizations with a stake or interest in the activities of the Own Your Future initiative.  It provides direction to the State on the activities of the Own Your Future initiative. Its specific charge includes the following activities:

  1. Provide oversight and direction for the implementation of Minnesota’s Own Your Future, including all three components of the initiative.
  2. Assist with development and review of materials for use by employers, grassroots organizations and other stakeholder organizations.
  3. Act as a liaison between Own Your Future and employers, grassroots and other stakeholder organizations on issues being addressed by the initiative.
  4. Participate as time and interest allow on one or more of the four subgroups developed to advise on various components of its work.

The four subgroups of the Advisory Panel include:

  • Review of materials
  • Outreach strategies
  • Speakers bureau
  • Product development (this subgroup includes external members as well)

The work of the advisory panel began in June 2012 and will continue until the initiative is completed.

The panel meets quarterly to review status and progress of the initiative, and provide input and feedback on activities.  Each meeting is about 2 hours in duration.

Meetings are generally held in the State Office Building or other state buildings near the Capitol.
