Department of Commerce Insurance Fraud investigation leads to guilty plea in Federal Court

A 46-year-old Stewartville man pleaded guilty today in federal court to one count of mail fraud and one count of tax evasion in connection with a scheme to defraud and obtain money and property from an elderly and vulnerable Elkton, Minn. couple.

Joseph William Hughes entered his plea before United States District Court Judge Ann Montgomery July 8 in Minneapolis. Hughes was indicted on April 23.

The Insurance Fraud Division at the Minnesota Department of Commerce issued search warrants on Hughes' Stewartville home in June of 2007 and conducted a joint investigation with the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division.
