Minnesota Department of Commerce Teaming Up with Local Law Enforcement to Stop Auto Theft

March 12, 2012

For Immediate Release

ST. PAUL, MN – An average of 23 cars are stolen every day in Minnesota – that’s almost one car every hour. Nearly 8,400 vehicles were stolen in Minnesota in 2010 alone, totaling more than $21.3 million in losses. But the state is teaming up with local law enforcement, county prosecutors, and community organizations to stop auto theft before it happens with a statewide auto theft prevention effort.

Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman will hold a news conference on the Upper Mall of the Minnesota State Capitol on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:00pm to announce participants in Minnesota’s Auto Theft Prevention Grant Program. Commissioner Rothman will be joined at the news conference by county sheriffs, county attorneys, law enforcement officers, and community organizations from around the state.

Following the news conference, marked squad cars from various law enforcement agencies will be on-hand to demonstrate license plate reader technologies used by police departments to track down car thieves.
