Project Summary
On March 11, 2011, Xcel Energy submitted an application to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (Commission) for a route permit to construct approximately 4.7 miles of new 115 kV transmission line that would primarily run north-south from the Mayhew Lake substation in Sauk Rapids Township to the Granite City substation and northwest-southeast from the intersection of Line 5509 with Lines 0887 and 0899 to transmission structure 39 in Minden Township.
- The application was accepted as complete by the Commission on April 11, 2011.
- A public information and scoping meeting was conducted by the Department of Commerce on May 11, 2011, at the Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.
- The scoping decision was issued by the Department of Commerce on June 6, 2011.
- The environmental assessment for the project was completed on September 16, 2011.
- A public hearing was conducted on behalf of the Public Utilities Commission on September 28, 2011, at Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.
- The Commission issued a route permit to Xcel Energy for the project on December 8, 2011.
For a variety of reasons, including the closure of the Verso paper mill in Sartell, Minn., Xcel Energy has elected not to construct the proposed St. Cloud loop project.
