Bruce Nelson, Commerce senior engineer, retires after 37 years
Bruce Nelson, a senior engineer in the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Division of Energy Resources for the past 37 years, will retire in early March. Nelson has been a key player in the energy efficiency world. Over the last 34 years he helped update Minnesota’s energy codes that are recognized nationally for outstanding efficiency in new homes. He helped bring new levels of efficiency to Minnesota buildings, equipment, and business practices through his building systems research, writing, educating, and administering thermal insulation standards.
Nelson’s building science knowledge also helped First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis win the 2011 EPA Energy Star Battle of the Buildings competition, an energy-savings achievement that saved $16,000 in energy costs in one year. Nelson said he looks forward to volunteer activities, leisure and travel opportunities, and occasionally assisting the Energy Division during retirement.
