FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Tuesday, July 1, 2008
The former manager of Shaokatan Power Partners pleaded guilty today in federal court to one count of mail fraud in connection with mailing fraudulently inflated bills to Xcel Energy for wind power during 2003 and 2004, resulting in a loss between $200,000 and $400,000.
Gregory Joseph Jaunich, 47, North Oaks, entered his plea July 1 before United States District Court Judge Paul Magnuson in St. Paul. Jaunich was indicted on Sept. 18, 2007.
The Market Assurance team at the Minnesota Department of Commerce conducted the preliminary investigation in this case after receiving information from the Energy team at the Department of Commerce that Shaokatan Power was possibly billing Xcel Energy and the state for wind energy it was not producing. Jaunich has since reimbursed the state for over $147,000.
