Federal Officials to Present Department of Commerce with Award
(ST. PAUL, MN) The Minnesota Department of Commerce's Office of Energy Security (OES) will be recognized this week for the progress the state has made in putting federal stimulus funds to work in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).
On Wednesday, January 13, at 10 a.m., Gil Sperling from the U.S. Department of Energy will present OES with an award designating the state's program as one of the top performers in the country with regard to use of weatherization funds.
In addition to Department of Commerce officials, recently-hired weatherization workers and officials from Community Action Partnership of Ramsey & Washington Counties, one of the state's partners in the program, will be available for comment. A blower door, a hallmark technology of modern-day weatherization, as well as a truck used to transport weatherization materials and crews will be on display at the event.
OES receives funding from the U.S Department of Energy on an annual basis to support the Weatherization Assistance Program, which has been in existence since 1976. In fiscal year 2010, the legislature appropriated almost $16 million for the program. Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the state received another $132 million in weatherization assistance funds.
To date, 1,392 homes have been weatherized in Minnesota using the ARRA funds. Another 2,300 homes are in progress.
