Please Note: The MN Board of Marriage and Family is not required to hold a public hearing regarding adoption of the proposed rules as the minimum threshold for requiring such a hearing was not met during the public comment period which closed March 30, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. The public hearing that was to be held on April 22, 2016 has been cancelled.
The Board of Marriage and Family Therapy has filed with the Office of Administrative Hearings (1) a Dual Notice of Intent to Adopt Rules and (2) a Statement of Need and Reasonableness (SONAR). These documents state the purpose of all proposed rule revisions and outline the process by which the Board will seek to adopt the proposed rules. You may review both documents here:
As you read the proposed rules, any language that is stricken is language that the Board is proposed to remove from the existing rule. Any language that is underlined is language the Board is proposing to add to existing rule.

Note for Recent Graduates: The Board recommends that recent graduates working in a therapy-related practice not utilize the designation "MA MFT" or "MS MFT" on business cards or advertising materials (e.g. "John Smith, MA MFT" or "Sue Jones, MS MFT"). Usage of these letters to denote an earned graduate degree have resulted in complaints alleging unlicensed practice of marriage and family therapy by the individual (as "MFT" is recognized and regularly used as an abbreviation for "marriage and family therapist," a protected practice term), or cause confusion for members of the public who mistake the letters as a representation of licensed status by the provider.
LMFT Factsheet: The Minnesota Department of Health has posted its LMFT Workforce factsheet online. Information compiled in the factsheet is from the workforce survey conducted as part of the LMFT license renewal process.
